New Leadership to Guide the Museum into the Next Century of Service

The Museum of Discovery has appointed Steven Schnell as its new Executive Director. With more than a decade of leadership experience in the science center field, he brings a strong record of organizational growth, community partnerships, and innovative program development. His appointment comes at a pivotal moment as the Museum prepares to celebrate its 100-year anniversary in 2027.

Schnell most recently served as the Executive Director of The Science Zone in Casper Wyoming. There, he successfully guided the organization through significant expansion capable of serving broader audiences and hosting a growing range of educational programs. Under his leadership, The Science Zone achieved dramatic increases in revenue, membership, and community impact, while strengthening its long-term sustainability.

In addition to his accomplishments within the center, Steven was recognized for building strong partnerships with schools, libraries, community centers, and peer institutions to expand the reach of science education. His approach emphasizes accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that high-quality STEAM experiences are available to all learners.

Melissa Bandy, Museum of Discovery Board Chairperson, stated, “Steven has had an impressive track record in innovation and development at The Science Zone. I’m excited about the leadership and energy I know Steven will bring to the Museum of Discovery to continue our mission.”

As Executive Director of the Museum of Discovery, Schnell will focus on advancing the museum by encouraging innovation, fostering a culture of philanthropy, and strengthening community engagement. Steven, and wife Carmen, are looking forward to being involved with the Museum and joining Central Arkansas’s community. “I have had the privilege to explore Arkansas quite extensively over the past 15 years and have enjoyed several visits to the museum while enjoying time with family in the area,” Schnell stated, “It has been thrilling getting to see the museum change as it continues to meet the ever-evolving needs of parents and children.”

The Museum of Discovery serves as Arkansas’s premier children’s science center, providing interactive exhibits, innovative programming, and outreach that inspire curiosity and prepare young Arkansans for careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. With Schnell at the helm, the Museum is poised to build on its rich history and expand its impact as it enters its second century of service.
