Million Women Mentors Program Kicking Off in Central Arkansas

The Museum of Discovery and the Arkansas STEM Coalition are partnering with Walmart to introduce Million Women Mentors in Central Arkansas with a kickoff event at 10 a.m. Friday, April 22, at the Ron Robinson Theater in the Arcade Building in the River Market District of downtown Little Rock.

Million Women Mentors (http://millionwomenmentors.org/) is a program that matches professional STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) men and women with middle school to career-ready young women who would benefit from mentorship. The goal is to increase the STEM workforce through mentoring starting in Arkansas and then expanding nationwide. Walmart is leading the Arkansas initiative, and the Museum of Discovery and Arkansas STEM Coalition are assisting with the Central Arkansas rollout.

“The Museum of Discovery’s mission is to ignite a passion for science, technology and math,” says museum CEO Kelley Bass. “Million Women Mentors is in lockstep with that mission by helping girls better understand the potential of STEM careers through working one on one with people who are already in those fields. We have great relationships with many STEM-focused companies in the area, and we’re glad to join the STEM Coalition in exposing them to this amazing program.”

Arkansas became the 31st state to officially launch Million Women Mentors with a February 2nd statewide kickoff event at Walmart in Bentonville, and a goal of 5,000 Arkansas mentors was established. Arkansas lieutenant governor Tim Griffin, honorary state chair for Million Women Mentors, spoke at the event.

“We are excited with the support we have received so far from Central Arkansans for the Million Women Mentors program, ”says Andrea Roberts, Sr click this link here now. Manager of STEM Strategy at Walmart.  “We believe this program will make a tremendous impact on STEM education efforts for girls and will help to provide young women the confidence needed to pursue and succeed in STEM fields.  We hope to see continued support and participation from Central Arkansans and are looking forward to the visit in April to tell you more about how you can get involved.”

At the April 22nd event, attendees will get a detailed overview of the Million Women Mentors program and a playbook on how to participate in the program. Attendance does not obligate participation.
