Baldwin & Shell and Museum of Discovery Hold Cardboard Construction Contest

Tips on constructing with cardboard

As Arkansans stay at home to protect themselves and others from COVID-19, Baldwin & Shell Construction Company and Museum of Discovery are giving them something “constructive” to do by co-hosting a cardboard construction contest. Participants can enter their creations into one of two categories, family-constructed or adult-constructed, for a chance to win a Museum of Discovery membership package and a private tour of a Baldwin & Shell construction site.

“Baldwin & Shell is proud to be involved with the Museum of Discovery for this contest,” said Scott Copas, Baldwin & Shell President and CEO. “During these uncertain times, we hope to inspire creativity and hands-on learning for children and adults of all ages.”

While cardboard construction is a simple and fun activity, it serves an educational purpose, says Mikahla Denney, Museum of Discovery’s Tinkering Studio manager. “Tinkering and building with cardboard encourages creativity, problem-solving, team building and discovery through trial and error. With families and individuals self-isolating and receiving at-home deliveries, they probably have copious amounts of time and cardboard. Hopefully this contest will put both to good use.” Denney does encourage participants to disinfect cardboard and frequently wash their hands during the construction process.

Participants can submit pictures or videos of their cardboard creations online by 8 p.m. Wednesday April 8, by using one of these options:

    • Post on Facebook at /MuseumofDiscovery or direct message the museum
    • Tag the museum and Baldwin & Shell on Instagram using @arkmod and @baldwinandshellcon along with #arkmodconstructs
    • Tag the museum on Twitter using @arkmod and #arkmodconstructs
    • Email to kthornton@museumofdiscovery.org

A team of Baldwin & Shell and Museum of Discovery employees will judge the submissions, narrow them down and then present their selections to the public for another vote. The winner of the family-constructed contest will receive a family membership to the Museum of Discovery for five people as well as a private, behind-the-scenes tour of a Baldwin & Shell construction site. The winner of the adult-constructed contest will receive two Science After Dark memberships, which provide free admission to the museum’s monthly adult event for one year, as well as a private, behind-the-scenes tour of a Baldwin & Shell construction site.
